What is a Steam Oven?
Although it may look like a standard wall oven, steam ovens cook primarily through steam. They contain a water canister inside the oven cavity, and when the water is injected into the boiler through a pump, the heat from the oven turns the water into steam. This is circulated around your food to cook it more evenly and provide more moisture than a regular oven.
Steam cooking is generally considered to be healthier than cooking through electric or gas heating elements. The high heat of a traditional oven can often destroy nutrients like vitamin C, antioxidants, and folate while a steam oven preserves them. The steam helps retain the natural moisture of food that is being cooked or reheated, eliminating the need for extra oils and fats to keep food moist — meaning your food will not only be better for you, it will be more flavourful too!
Since steam ovens work by heating water to 212˚ Fahrenheit and releasing the steam into the oven, it reaches its desired temperature faster than a standard oven. Therefore, steam ovens cook food faster. The direct heat from the steam means that food like veggies, poultry and fish are cooked in about 15 minutes. Steaming also prevents cross-flavoring, so you can cook tuna and creme brulee at the same time without getting a fishy dessert.
What are the Benefits of a Steam Oven?
Steam ovens use moist heat, which offers the following advantages:
Faster cooking time
Essential vitamins and minerals are retained (typically lost when food is roasted)
Efficient defrosting capabilities
Natural moisture of food is preserved
No cross-flavoring between food (you can cook more than one kind of food at the same time)
Bonus: You may use a steam oven to quickly disinfect baby bottles and jars
What is a Combi-Steam Oven?
“Combi” is short for combination. These ovens combine the heating of convection baking with the moisture of steam cooking to ensure a thorough and even heat distribution. With a combi-steam oven, you can enhance your convection/fan forced heat with the benefits of steam. It usually happens simultaneously giving more balance between browning from the convection heat and moisture on the inside from the steam.
